Spain prevents adoption of common position on free movement of persons - No official link with future regional policy, but all points towards a "comprehensive solution" having to be found in Gothenburg

Brussels, 14/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the Foreign Ministers of the Fifteen were unable to reach agreement on a common negotiating position for accession negotiations with the candidate countries of Central and Eastern Europe on the free movement of person chapter, Spain being strongly opposed to a proposed compromise made by the Swedish Presidency which, it seems, could have been backed by the other fourteen delegations.
