Bulgaria: Foreign direct investment (FDI) in this country surpassed USD 1.1 billion in 2000, according to the President of the Foreign Investment Agency Georgui Tabakov. According to the French economic daily Les Echos, the biggest foreign investments this year were by: the Italian bank UNICREDITO (which bought Bulgaria's biggest bank, BULBANK), the National Bank of Greece, and the Russian oil company LUKOIL (which bought the Bulgarian oil refinery NEFTOCHIM).
