The Anglo-Dutch group REED ELSEVIER has taken over the American HARCOURT GENERAL INC ($2.1 bn turnover in 1999), specialised in school publications, for $4.45 bn. REED ELSEVIER, whose educational division generated a revenue of $293 million in 1999, will buy a 100 stake at $59 a share.
