EP calls on EU to help countries affected and not to accept any derogation from environmental norms in enlargement negotiations - Countries responsible must pay for damage

Strasbourg, 18/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Union should intervene to help countries that are affected by the ecological disaster caused by the recent cyanide spill from the Aurul gold mine in Romania. The spill has considerably polluted several rivers of the region - the Lepos and the Somes in Romania, the Tisza in Hungary and the Danube in Serbia and Bulgaria.
