European Parliament to vote on Tuesday on simplifying EU rules on artificial intelligence

In the plenary session on Tuesday 16 June, the European Parliament will vote, on simplifying EU rules on artificial intelligence (AI). This vote follows the provisional agreement reached on 7 May on the legislative package known as the ‘AI omnibus’, which introduces a new ban on non-consensual “nudification” following the scandal involving Grok and postpones the entry into force of the obligations applicable to high-risk AI systems in order to give the sector time to put in place the necessary standards on the market (see EUROPE 13864/1)

The Patriots for Europe group has tabled a motion seeking to reject approval of the provisional agreement. For its part, the ECR group has tabled several amendments, notably to Article 2, in order to specify that the regulation does not apply to the research, testing or development activities of AI systems and models before they are placed on the market. It is also proposing to amend Article 6, insisting that the classification of “high risk” must remain linked to a genuine safety function.

However, the amendments proposed by the ECR would not be put to the vote if the compromise agreement were to secure the support of a large majority, according to European Parliament sources. The Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) had already given its green light on 2 June (see EUROPE 13879/32). If Parliament gives its final approval, the EU Council is expected to adopt the text on 29 June. (Original version in French by Ana Pisonero Hernàndez)
