MEPs to vote in plenary on amendments tabled by left-wing groups on new genomic techniques

On Monday 15 June, the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment did not vote on the amendments tabled for a second reading by the S&D, Greens/EFA and The Left groups seeking to amend the Interinstitutional Agreement on the proposal governing the use of new genomic techniques (NGTs). Instead, the vote on these amendments will take place in plenary on Wednesday.

A total of 37 amendments had been tabled regarding the EU Council position (see EUROPE 13872/13).

During the vote in the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, several requests for roll call votes were made: the EPP requested a roll call vote on the EU Council position, while the S&D, Greens/EFA and The Left groups requested roll call votes on amendments 1, 9, 18, 20 and 27.

The committee rejected not only amendments 1 and 2, which sought to reject the European Commission proposal, but also the S&D group’s request for a vote on amendments. The EU Council position was then approved (58 votes in favour and 31 against).

Lastly, the committee approved (56 votes in favour, 36 against and one abstention) the draft recommendation for a second reading on this text.

The plenary vote will take place on Wednesday 17 June. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
