The European Commission announced on Monday 15 June the launch of two calls for evidence aimed at gathering views to help shape the future European strategy for ocean and water research and innovation (R&I). This initiative is part of both the ‘EU Water Resilience Strategy’ and the ‘European Ocean Pact’.
The first call for evidence (https://aeur.eu/f/mck ) concerns marine research and innovation (priorities for marine ecosystems protection and restoration, ocean observation, and sustainable blue economy development).
The second (https://aeur.eu/f/mcl ) concerns freshwater resilience. It addresses freshwater system management, water efficiency and reuse and innovative solutions for sustainable water management.
These two consultations are intended to support the development of a so-called ‘source-to-sea’ approach, which considers the entire water cycle as an interconnected system. The contributions will help guide future European investments in research and innovation, notably under the Horizon Europe programme for the 2028-2034 period, as well as under the future European Competitiveness Fund.
