European Disability Forum calls for more inclusive climate action

The European Disability Forum (EDF) published a report on Friday 12 June, which brings together several examples of climate action directly involving persons with disabilities around the world. According to the organisation, climate-related projects are indeed still too often designed without taking account of these people’s needs and views.

Training persons with disabilities for leadership roles, their participation in decisions on climate policies, better support for young people, women and indigenous populations with disabilities, as well as increased funding for projects led by their representative organisations, are all mentioned as ways forward.

In addition, the report gives the example of several initiatives, such as that of the NIDWAN association in Nepal, which says it has raised awareness among more than 800 indigenous young people and women with disabilities in seven provinces through research, capacity-building and participation in the development of public policies.

Lastly, the EDF is calling for more states to integrate disability into their nationally determined contributions on climate and to address the lack of data on the effects of climate change on persons with disabilities.
