EU countries approve two texts aligning EU law with decisions of international fisheries organisations

On Wednesday 29 April, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States to the European Union (Coreper) approved two interinstitutional compromise texts in the field of fisheries, paving the way for the reaching of agreements at first reading with the European Parliament. These texts aim to incorporate fisheries conservation and management measures adopted at international level into EU law.

The first proposal concerns a regulation on certain provisions for fishing in the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Agreement area. Technical interinstitutional negotiations were successfully completed. The compromise text was approved by the Council Working Party on Fisheries Policy on 23 April, and confirmed by Coreper on 29 April (https://aeur.eu/f/lqn ).

The second proposal, presented on 12 May 2025, aims to update several EU regulations on regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs) to bring them into line with the most recent recommendations adopted at international level. In particular, it concerns the areas under the jurisdiction of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) and the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) (https://aeur.eu/f/lqo ). Following the adoption of the report by the European Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries in February 2026, interinstitutional negotiations led to a technical agreement on 27 March. The compromise text was approved by the Council Working Party on 23 April, then validated by Coreper. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
