In a joint statement published on Tuesday 21 April, the World Shipping Council (WSC) and six other bodies representing global shipping (BIMCO, CLIA, ICS, INTERCARGO, INTERFERRY and INTERTANKO) called on the member countries of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reach agreement on reducing the sector’s emissions.
“Following the postponement, in October 2025, of the adoption of new IMO greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations, the shipping industry highlights the vital importance of IMO Member States agreeing on a way forward,” write the authors of the declaration. This appeal comes ahead of a meeting of the organisation’s Marine Environment Protection Committee from 27 April to 1 May.
The organisations emphasise the IMO’s role as a regulator for the safety and security of international shipping, as well as for the protection of the marine environment. Highlighting the investments already made in alternative fuels and the introduction of innovative technologies, the six maritime organisations reaffirm their desire to continue along this path.
