26/03/26 (Agence Europe) – In a report published on 19 March, the rapporteurs Javi López (S&D, Spanish) and Borja Giménez Larraz (EPP, Spanish), of the European Parliament’s AFET and INTA Committees support the validation of the ‘Modernised Global Agreement’ (MGA) by the EU and Mexico. An accompanying recommendation seeks to give the explicit consent of the European Parliament. On trade issues, the report welcomes the fact that “the new market access commitments with regard to trade in services will open up new business opportunities for EU and Mexican companies”. However, they note the absence of a “dedicated and comprehensive” chapter on energy in the agreement and recommend, among other things, the inclusion of a chapter on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Agreement, for which negotiations were concluded in January 2025, is due to be signed in May (see EUROPE 13821/34, EUROPE 13701/3).
