24/03/2026 (Agence Europe) – On 18 March, the French courts ordered the opening of an investigation against MEP Fabrice Leggeri (Patriots for Europe) for “complicity in crimes against humanity and torture”, in his capacity as former director of the Frontex agency, according to information obtained by Agence France-Presse on Tuesday 24 March. The complaint was lodged in 2024 by the Human Rights League (LDH) before being ruled inadmissible. However, the Paris Court of Appeal overturned this decision, allowing the appointment of an investigating judge and the opening of an investigation. The LDH accuses the former director, in office between 2015 and 2022, of having set up a coordinated “migrant hunt” in the Mediterranean Sea, encouraging illegal pushbacks and violent interceptions by the Libyan and Greek authorities. According to the LDH’s lawyer, Emmanuel Daoud, the proceedings will have to examine Mr Leggeri’s criminal responsibility in the “slaughter ” of thousands of people at Europe’s borders. (JM)
