24/03/2026 (Agence Europe) – The Slovakian measure charging higher diesel prices to owners of vehicles registered outside Slovakia is “highly discriminatory and against European Union law”, said Ricardo Cardoso, a spokesman for the European Commission, on Tuesday 24 March. While we understand the Slovak authorities’ desire to support their citizens in the face of rising energy prices caused by the American-Israeli attacks on Iran, the measures taken must “not discriminate between nationality, nor should they undermine the integrity of our single market”, he added. Calling on Member States not to act unilaterally on this issue, Cardoso said that the Commission “will take legal action” to ensure that these principles of EU law are respected. (MB)
