France calls for all EU Member States to join Mercator intergovernmental organisation

At the ‘Environment’ Council on Tuesday 17 March, France called for all EU Member States to join the future Mercator intergovernmental organisation, which will focus on ocean observation and the development of a marine digital twin (see EUROPE B13828A7).

The French delegation stressed that accurate knowledge of the oceans is essential, not only for scientific research, but also for the resilience of coastal populations to climate change and for public policy planning.
