“The EU continues to hold Iran accountable. Today, EU Member States ambassadors approved new sanctions targeting 19 regime officials and entities responsible for serious human rights violations”, welcomed the EU High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, on X on Wednesday 11 March. “As the Iran war continues, the EU will protect its interests and pursue those responsible for domestic repression. It also sends a message to Tehran that Iran’s future cannot be built on repression”, she added. According to diplomatic sources consulted by AFP, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is not among those targeted by these measures. These sanctions are in response, among other things, to the violent repression of the January demonstrations and the censorship of the Internet. The foreign affairs ministers of the EU27 will be asked to approve them on 16 March in Brussels. (SP)
