EU Council should support accession of Uzbekistan to WTO

The EU Council is expected to take the decision to support Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO, as revealed in a draft text published on Friday 20 February.

In October 2025, on behalf of the EU, the European Commission finalised bilateral negotiations on a set of market opening commitments for Uzbekistan.

The draft accession package for the Republic of Uzbekistan still has to be examined by WTO members and can only be adopted at the 14th Ministerial Conference, to be held in Cameroon from 26 to 29 March.

This decision would bring to a close more than 30 years of negotiations for Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO, which began in 1995.

As the document notes, the European Commission expects the EU Council to take a decision on the EU’s position on the outcome of the negotiations “once the situation regarding the relevant texts becomes clear, either at the beginning or during the Ministerial Conference itself”.
