On Thursday 29 January, the European Commission announced that it had granted €153 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Ukraine and Moldova, the host countries of Ukrainian refugees.
This package is intended to support millions of Ukrainians facing the fifth winter of war with Russia, with most households without electricity or heating. It will fund food, shelter, drinking water, medical care and psychological support, with priority given to the elderly, children and people with disabilities.
“We want people to have shelter, warmth and hope when they need it most”, Hadja Lahbib, Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, in a press release. “Our solidarity with Ukraine is not a slogan, it is reliable, sustained humanitarian action driven strictly by needs on the ground”, she added.
The aid is in addition to the 447 European generators deployed earlier this month (see EUROPE 13793/4), to which a further 500 have since been added.
