On Thursday 29 January, the European Commission published a mid-term report on the Zero Pollution Action Plan, revealing significant progress in certain areas, but also some worrying delays.
In May 2021, the EU embarked on a pioneering journey towards zero pollution, contributing to Europe’s long-term sustainable competitiveness and resilience, according to the report.
This mid-term review highlights the progress made towards achieving the 2030 targets, with “significant reductions in air pollution, the use of pesticides and plastic pollution at sea”, the report details. However, challenges persist, particularly in terms of waste management, microplastic pollution, noise and nutrient pollution.
The European Commission will focus on the implementation of agreed legislation and policies, including the Water Resilience Strategy, the Ocean Pact and the Chemicals Industry Action Plan.
The Commission estimates the investment needed to implement environmental legislation at €58 billion a year.
