There are no major threats to Greenland, according to Lars Løkke Rasmussen

On Thursday 29 January, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that there were no major threats to Greenland, despite American claims to the contrary.

While it is “obvious” that the security situation in the Arctic is “gradually” deteriorating, the “image sometimes conveyed of major threats to Greenland is wrong”, he explained on his arrival at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

According to the Minister, Chinese state vessels have not been seen in Greenland’s exclusive economic zone for almost ten years, and there is no Chinese investment in the country.

The day after a meeting in Washington between American and Danish representatives, the Minister said he was pleased that the two parties had begun a dialogue, but would not speculate on the outcome. “The issue has not yet been settled, but we have launched a dialogue and it is constructive”, he added, adding that new meeting dates had been set.
