Border clashes resume—EU calls for de-escalation of conflict

09/12/2025 (Agence Europe)On Monday, 8 December, the European Union called on Cambodia and Thailand to show “maximum restraint” following the recent exchange of fire that began on 7 December, less than two months after a ceasefire agreement had been reached. The clashes at the border continued throughout the day on Tuesday, 9 December. The EU called for both parties to revert to the joint declaration signed on 26 October as well as to the confidence-building measures set out therein. Overseen by Malaysia and the United States, this expanded ceasefire declaration had been signed during the ASEAN summit following heightened tensions last July (see EUROPE 13687/33). The EU stated that it is ready to support the measures that have been agreed upon by both parties with the aim of de-escalation—a press release from the European External Action Service (EEAS) specifying that this “includ[es] humanitarian de-mining”.
