09/12/2025 (Agence Europe) – The European Union and Canada held their first ever Digital Partnership Council in Montreal on Tuesday 9 December. Like the partnership with Singapore, the partnership with Canada should enable the EU to consolidate exchanges and cooperation between the two parties, particularly on the development of artificial intelligence and digital sovereignty. This partnership comes at a time of geopolitical instability, when the EU is looking for new partners to reduce its dependence on American services and suppliers. The two sides said they were working together to strengthen the security of international connectivity and pool their expertise in quantum technologies, semiconductors and high-performance computing. This increased cooperation between Canada and the EU is part of the new ‘Digital Agenda’ presented by the Commission last May, which aims to promote strategic alliances to boost European competitiveness (see EUROPE 13654/4).
