On Monday 8 December, Eurelectric sent a letter to the European energy ministers ahead of their sector Council meeting on 15 December.
The ministers will have a focused discussion with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the relationship between energy and security in a tense geopolitical context.
“Energy infrastructure has become a real target for hybrid attacks as adversaries vie for influence and control in a changing world order, with Europe caught in the crossfire”, commented Eurelectric.
The association is asking European ministers to give priority to planning to tackle physical and cyber attacks. In its view, recent defence commitments by NATO allies should go some way to supporting the security of electricity supply.
It also wants ministers to optimise “open strategic autonomy”, which means striking a balance between diversifying value chains and supporting local production.
Lastly, Eurelectric calls for security of supply to be guaranteed through holistic planning, investment in new infrastructure and improved market signals in favour of the profitability of flexibility.
