Alongside the EU-African Union summit bringing together European and African heads of state or government in Luanda (Angola) (see other news) (see EUROPE 13757/16), on Monday 24 November the European Commission announced a €143 million financial package to support relief operations in a number of crisis areas in sub-Saharan Africa.
€2.5 million has been allocated for aid to the Central African Republic, €8 million to Nigeria, €30 million to Ethiopia, €30 million to Somalia and €35 million to South Sudan.
The European Union institution has also announced €38 million for the countries in the centre of the Sahel region, where the EU is considering strengthening its presence (see EUROPE 13756/6).
This emergency funding will support food aid, access to water and sanitation, healthcare and assistance to the most vulnerable communities by meeting their basic needs, said the Commission in a press release on Monday.
This EU financial support is implemented in partnership with UN agencies, international organisations and NGOs. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
