The major challenges related to the availability and functionality of safe and secure parking areas affect more than professional drivers’ well-being, according to a European Commission report published on Friday 21 November. They also exacerbate the sector’s labour shortage and impact the efficiency of logistics chains and overall road safety.
Only 9% of drivers in Europe say they feel safe in car parks. Drivers face theft of cargo and fuel, cabin break-ins and the boarding of stowaways for irregular immigration purposes. Violent robberies are also reported, which puts their lives in danger.
Carriers and drivers report a shortage of available parking areas: there is currently a shortfall of 390,057 spaces, equivalent to 3,250 parking areas. This situation exacerbates the illegal parking issue, which increases safety risks for drivers. What’s more, 52% of drivers questioned felt the car parks were unclean.
In addition, they are unable to access real-time information on available secure parking spaces due to a notable lack of comprehensive data.
The Commission concluded that these challenges must be addressed through strategic investments and adjustments by Member States, including promoting stakeholder collaboration and awareness, encouraging rapid upgrades, and improving the connectivity of safe and secure parking areas.
