24/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 23 November, the European Commission launched a call for evidence to gather data and opinions on the need to revise the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) (see EUROPE 13178/11), which was last updated in 2018. This evaluation follows the development of digital technologies, the widespread use of connected television sets, the shift in audiences towards online platforms and the emergence of new players such as ‘influencers’. It will examine whether the directive is still appropriate for guaranteeing the visibility of European media, ensuring fair competition between traditional and digital players and protecting viewers, particularly minors. It also involves simplifying advertising rules. Open until 21 December, feedback will contribute to the evaluation planned for 2026, as part of the ‘European Democracy Shield’.
