Provisional European Parliament/EU Council agreement to revise Measuring Instruments Directive

On Tuesday 18 November, negotiators from the Council of the EU and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on the revision of the directive on harmonised requirements for measuring instruments (MID). The new directive includes new devices that are essential to the green and digital transition: electric charging stations, compressed gas dispensers and electricity, gas or heat meters.

The co-legislators also agreed to extend the scope of the directive to cover charging cables not only for electric vehicles, but also for boats, aircraft and trains.

The text also regulates the display of charging meters or devices. The agreement takes up the EU Council’s position, i.e. that gas and electricity meters must have their own display, but electric vehicle chargers and compressed gas dispensers can have a remote display, in the vehicle or on a smartphone, for example.

The deadline for transposing the directive has been set at 24 months, and the text will apply 30 months after adoption.

The only new feature of the agreement is that certification agencies in the Member States that distribute certificates will be able to do so even before the directive is transposed for products that were already covered by the current directive. This will reduce the number of steps required in the relatively short period between transposition and the application deadline.

The European Parliament is not expected to approve the agreement in plenary session until February. (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
