18/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – With 1,128,063 validated statements of support from EU citizens in 11 Member States, the European citizens’ initiative ‘Ban on conversion practices in the European Union’ (https://aeur.eu/f/jhy ) was submitted to the European Commission on Tuesday 18 November. The organisers are calling on the Commission to propose a binding legal ban on practices defined as “interventions aimed at changing, repressing or suppressing the sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression of LGBTQ+ persons” within the EU. The Commission has until 18 May 2026 to submit its official response, specifying any measures it intends to take. According to figures provided by the Council of Europe in 2023 (https://aeur.eu/f/jie ), around 2% of LGBTQ+ people said they had been subjected to conversion practices, and 5% had been offered interventions.
