On Tuesday 30 September, the European Ombudsman announced that she had opened an enquiry into how artificial intelligence standards are drawn up for the European Commission.
This investigation follows a complaint lodged last July by a civil society organisation criticising the lack of transparency on the part of the standards bodies responsible for developing standards for the Commission. They are not obliged to publish information about their employees or the minutes of their meetings with the Commission.
According to the Commission itself, three bodies are responsible for drawing up standards at EU level: CEN, CENELEC and ETSI. The first two play the main role in developing standards relating to the AI regulation.
At this stage, the Ombudsman has asked the Commission to answer a number of questions about the composition of the group responsible for preparing standards, the transparency rules applied by standardisation bodies, and the tools it has for monitoring and examining results.
