On Wednesday 24 September, the European Commission published its strategy for implementing the ‘ViDA’ package on value added tax in the digital age, aimed at supporting businesses and Member States in the practical implementation of updates to the Community framework for value added tax (VAT).
The implementation strategy provides a ‘roadmap’ with key action points and dates, ensuring coordinated and effective implementation. The Commission has also identified a number of potential implementation risks and has considered corresponding mitigation measures, which are set out in the document.
By closely monitoring the integration of ‘ViDA’ with other legislative efforts, the Commission “seeks to fully realise the benefits of a modernised VAT system and strengthen the Single Market”.
The ‘ViDA’ package is expected to generate substantial economic benefits of between €172 billion and €214 billion over a decade, including €51 billion in savings for businesses.
