Noting the growing number of conflicts around the world, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, reaffirmed on Thursday 25 September in New York the European Union’s “unwavering commitment” to effective multilateralism and a rules-based international order, with the UN at its centre.
“Bold reform through the ‘UN80’ initiative and the implementation of the ‘Pact for the Future’ is essential. This is not simply papering over the cracks. This will help us work more effectively as an international community across the humanitarian, development and peace nexus”, declared Ms Kallas at the second ministerial meeting of the Group of Twenty (G20) under the South African Presidency.
“An effective United Nations is also crucial to address ongoing crises in the world today from the Middle East – Gaza – to Africa - Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Great Lakes, and Rwanda”, she continued.
A G20 summit will be held in Johannesburg on 22 and 23 November.
