On Monday 15 September, the Prime Ministers of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, and Finland, Petteri Orpo, sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, calling for a revision of the Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Regulation.
Nordic leaders are denouncing potential restrictions in the LULUCF framework that would threaten Nordic forestry and reduce Europe’s climate efficiency. The Prime Ministers point out that Nordic timber comes from stable democracies, unlike Russian timber, the purchase of which is funding the war in Ukraine.
“As our respective countries have been allocated substantial obligations, based on the current Commission guidelines and according to the latest analyses, both Finland and Sweden are projected to be unsuccessful in our respective commitments. That applies to both the first and second commitment periods in the LULUCF”, the letter states.
They call on the EU to make full use of the flexibilities provided by the LULUCF legislation in order to support the climate, security of supply and the green transition (see EUROPE 13686/5).
