15/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – With two-thirds of the members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) having deposited their instruments of acceptance, the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies entered into force on Monday 15 September. Adopted in 2022, this binding text aims to eliminate subsidies that contribute to illegal fishing, particularly for overexploited stocks. It is now up to members to transpose its provisions into national law. “This agreement demonstrates how you can put trade in the service of both people and planet”, said WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The agreement on fisheries, even if it leaves aside the question of overcapacity, was the greatest success of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in 2022. (LM)
