On Friday 12 September and until 10 October, the European Commission launched a call for evidence to prepare the first ‘five-year European asylum and migration management strategy’.
Accompanying the implementation of the 'Pact on Migration and Asylum’, the consultation is intended to forge “a strategic outlook that balances the different aspects and interests in EU migration and asylum policy in the medium- to long term”, explains the Commission.
The strategy, expected by the end of 2025, will assess the existing legal framework’s relevance and address various challenges, such as managing the EU’s external borders, compliance with international law, in particular for people rescued at sea, and the distribution of responsibilities for processing asylum applications. It will also focus on returns and secondary movements, legal migration channels, support for host countries and preventing irregular migration. In 2024, 996,805 applications for international protection were lodged in the EU, 12% fewer than in 2023. The actual return rate of people ordered to leave the EU was 24%.
