On Saturday 26 July, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, welcomed the release of several political prisoners in Niger. However, Ms Kallas deplored the continued detention of former President Mohamed Bazoum, as well as other political figures and representatives of civil society, by the military junta currently in power.
“The EU reiterates its call for the release of these people, who remain in detention for political reasons. Democracy, human rights and the Rule of law remain priorities in the EU’s external action”, she said in a statement on behalf of the EU.
The High Representative assured that the EU was “available for a frank, honest and structured dialogue with the Niger authorities”, pointing out that certain cooperation and humanitarian support projects had been reactivated at the request of the local authorities.
“The EU reiterates its desire to see the people of Niger enjoy prosperity, stability and peace”, added Ms Kallas, condemning the various acts of terrorism that have been perpetrated in the country. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
