EU sanctions five Russian judges responsible for Alexei Gorinov’s convictions

On Tuesday 15 July, the Council of the European Union decided to sanction five Russian judges, whom it considers “responsible for serious violations or abuses of human rights and for the repression of civil society and democratic opposition in Russia”. All of these judges are linked to the imprisonment and sentencing of local MP Alexei Gorinov, “on politically motivated prosecution cases”, for expressing his opinion on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. They are Roman Vladimirov, judge of the 2nd Western District Military Court, Katerina Kirichenko, judge of Presnensky District Court, Maksim Sokolovskiy, presiding judge of the appellate panel of judges of the Moscow City Court, and Larisa Martynova and Elena Zhuravleva, members of that court. They are subject to an asset freeze and an EU visa ban. See the legal document: https://aeur.eu/f/hw7 (CG)
