Businesses, cities and civil society organisations have expressed their support for “swift and ambitious legislation to decarbonise light and heavy duty vehicles in company fleets”, in a letter sent to European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apóstolos Tzitzikóstas on Tuesday 15 July (see EUROPE 13612/14).
The letter was sent ahead of the high-level strategic dialogue on decarbonising corporate fleets scheduled for Thursday 17 July. The signatories strongly encourage introducing a regulation to accelerate corporate car electrification in order to achieve an overall electrification rate of at least 90% in the EU by 2030. This rate would only apply to new registrations of company cars.
In addition, the regulation should set binding zero-emission targets for freight transport by 2030 for large cargo owners. “This approach places the responsibility where the purchasing power lies, ensuring demand for zero-emission freight solutions”, they argued.
