On Tuesday 15 July, the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) approved (by 46 votes in favour, two against and 11 abstentions) the own-initiative report by Michalis Hadjipantela (EPP, Cypriot) on the simplification and harmonisation of tax legislation (see EUROPE 13680/22).
“This Report is calling for a simpler, more transparent and predictable EU tax framework that reduces complexity, administrative burden and increases our competitiveness”, commented the rapporteur in a press release. “To boost competitiveness, we call for thorough impact assessments, greater use of digital tools to reduce compliance costs, standardised templates, improved coordination among Member States, and revision of unnecessary rules that burden especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)”.
MEPs are calling on the European Commission to set up a European tax data portal to improve the automatic exchange of information and reduce the administrative burden.
They are also calling on the Commission to evaluate and simplify the current value added tax (VAT) framework.
