09/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – At their sectoral council meeting in Brussels on Tuesday 8 July (see EUROPE 13676/20), the European economy and finance ministers validated the interpretation of the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) according to which the ECT arbitration clause cannot be applied to intra-EU arbitration proceedings. This approval follows the agreement reached by the committee of representatives of the Member States to the European Union (Coreper) on 2 July, corresponding to the position of the European Parliament. A plenary vote took place on 18 June. The Commission could potentially extend the coverage of the ‘inter se’ agreement to Switzerland and the UK in the future, according to a request by Anna Cavazzini MEP (Greens/EFA, German) (see EUROPE 13662/8).
