09/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 9 July, The Left group in the European Parliament announced that German activist Carola Rackete was resigning as an MEP. “As someone with a background in social movements, my team and I discussed the idea of a collective mandate from the outset. This is what is happening now with the withdrawal of my mandate”, stated Ms Rackete in a press release. “It was planned from the outset that her term of office would last one year”, said a parliamentary source. An environmentalist at heart, Ms Rackete made a name for herself as the captain of the Sea Watch, humanitarian rescue vessel for migrants in the Mediterranean Sea (see EUROPE 12341/12). She will be replaced by her compatriot and The Left member Martin Günther (MB)
