EBA consults on greenwashing risks for retail banking products

09/07/2025 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 9 July, the European Banking Authority (EBA) launched a public consultation proposing to revise its guidelines on oversight and governance arrangements for retail banking products. The proposed amendments aim to strike the right balance in clarifying existing requirements regarding oversight and governance arrangements for banking products with environmental, social and governance (ESG) characteristics. The aim is to limit the harm to consumers that could arise if financial institutions fail to comply with conduct requirements when offering products with ESG characteristics. The EBA also wants to avoid imposing an additional regulatory burden on them. The EBA plans to publish its final guidelines in the first quarter of 2026, with a view to implementation on 1 December 2026. The consultation is open until Thursday 9 October.
