03/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – According to a new report published on Thursday 3 July by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the seasonal migration of wild birds and the importation of certain US products, such as those containing raw milk, could constitute pathways for the introduction into Europe of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) genotype, which is currently affecting US dairy cows. To date, this type of virus has not been reported in any country other than the United States, according to EFSA. EFSA scientists point out that the main European staging areas where large populations of birds are concentrated, such as Iceland, Great Britain, Ireland, western Scandinavia and large wetlands, such as the Wadden Sea on the Dutch, Danish and German coasts, would be favourable locations for early detection of the virus during the seasonal migration of wild birds.
