On Thursday 3 July, the European Commission selected 94 transport projects to receive almost €2.8 billion in EU subsidies under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
77% of these subsidies will be allocated to rail transport, in particular to build Rail Baltica in the Baltic region and Poland, and high-speed rail lines in the Czech Republic and Poland.
Ports in Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, Croatia and Poland will be upgraded with electricity supplied by the shore-side power grid to minimise emissions from ships at berth. The investment will also benefit urban mobility, with funds allocated to prepare for building or modernising multimodal passenger hubs in cities such as Leuven, Norrköping, Nice, Marseille and Bolzano. These hubs will provide seamless connections between different modes of transport, making it easier for people to get around the city.
Investments will also be made to increase capacity in Polish ports, while the EU will help Ukraine adopt the standard EU rail gauge. (Original version in French by Anne Damiani)
