The Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU will continue the work of evaluating the common fisheries policy (CFP) (https://aeur.eu/f/hnj ), “focusing on simplifying legislation to allow green considerations to guide future sustainable development of European fisheries”, according to the six-monthly work programme (see other news).
It is prepared to open negotiations on potential legislative proposals concerning fisheries in the context of the EU’s future multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2028–2034.
Denmark’s ambition is to advance the “green transition of the European fishing fleet” and promote sustainable development in fisheries and aquaculture, specifically by facilitating the use of “low-impact fishing gear”.
As for the rest, it will be a fairly standard presidency for this time of year—during which ministers will negotiate the total allowable catches (TACs) and quotas for 2026 (see EUROPE 13666/9).
22–23 September. Maritime, fisheries, and aquaculture aspects of the post-2027 MFF; annual EU-UK consultations on fishing opportunities for 2026; and the EU’s consultations with Norway and coastal States.
27–28 October. Agreement on the TACs and quotas for 2026 in the Baltic Sea.
17 November. Presentation of proposals on the TACs and quotas for 2026 (and on deep-sea species for 2027) in the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea as well as in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
11–12 December. Political agreement on the TACs and quotas for 2026 (and 2027) in the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea and on those in the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea as well as post-2027 financing for fisheries and aquaculture.
