On Tuesday 1 July, the EPP Group in the European Parliament outlined a number of actions that could be taken immediately at EU level to increase the supply of affordable housing in the European Union.
“’Build, Build, Build’ must become the guiding principle behind Europe’s response to the housing crisis”, say the Christian Democrat MEPs in a letter to the European Commission.
In their view, the following measures can be taken without prejudice to the position that the European Parliament will adopt on the housing crisis in Europe: revising EU law to reduce the administrative burden, in particular by simplifying planning and permitting procedures; targeted reductions in bank capital requirements to free up mortgage funding; calling for a horizontal assessment of the regulatory framework to eliminate unnecessary rules that do not contribute to affordable and energy-efficient housing; and prioritising housing construction projects in the allocation of existing EU funds, potentially by mobilising unspent envelopes.
