02/06/25 (Agence Europe) – The League of European Research Universities (LERU) has welcomed the EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy, presented on Wednesday 28 May by the European Commission (see EUROPE 13650/2), particularly the initiatives that recognise and support the role of research universities in this ecosystem. However, for LERU, “the Strategy’s success will hinge on the long-overdue completion of the European Single Market, particularly in areas such as capital, taxation, patents, labour and public procurement”. In their view, many of the ideas in the strategy are not new. “It's only by addressing structural gaps and building on Europe’s strengths that the EU can become a genuine leader in global innovation”, said LERU Secretary-General Professor Kurt Deketelaere on Monday 2 June.
