In a joint press release published on Monday 2 June, the European Consumer Organisation, EuroCommerce and BusinessEurope call on the European Commission to “swiftly” review the CPC Regulation, which provides a framework for consumer protection in the EU, as it has become inadequate and insufficiently implemented.
In particular, the three signatories denounce the unfair competition inflicted by “rogue traders and third-country marketplaces ignoring EU rules”, and from which European companies suffer.
The current CPC Regulation is ill-suited to the increasing digitalisation of commercial practices, as illustrated by the rise of platforms such as Shein and Temu, they argue.
Its revision is intended to “speed up cases”, “modernise CPC procedural rules” and give more power to the Commission “to address EU-wide infringements”.
Last September, several Member States, led by Germany, asked the Commission to tighten controls on certain online sales platforms (see EUROPE 13491/3).
