The Erasmus+ programme is of paramount importance for university cooperation and mobility in Europe, according to a report published on Tuesday 20 May by the European University Association (EUA), based on feedback from 500 institutions in 49 countries.
The contributions made by the EU programme in higher education establishments to the quality of education, the internationalisation of courses and cooperation between universities are highlighted in particular, with a view to the next generation of Erasmus+, which will be launched in 2028.
Erasmus+ also contributes to inclusion, digital transformation, sustainability and civic engagement.
While the EU’s next multiannual financial framework is being drawn up, the EUA is calling for Erasmus+ to be supported and consolidated, both financially and structurally.
The report recommends simplifying administrative management, improving digital tools and better distribution of funding.
In a context where the EU must invest in “its competitiveness, the well-being of its societies and maintaining its leadership in the green and digital transitions”,Michael Gaebel, the EUA’s Director of Higher Education Policy, stated that, “it is essential to increase investment in higher education”.
