19/05/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 15 May, the European Commission awarded the Nuclear Innovation Prize, organised as part of Euratom’s research and training programme. 28 proposals were evaluated by independent experts on the basis of their originality, technical excellence, commercial potential and relevance to EU objectives. The prize covers three categories: nuclear reactor system safety, radioactive waste management and radiation protection. The top prizes went to: Ahmed Bentaib, for ‘COMOS’, his innovative containment monitoring system for severe accident management; Virginie Solans, for her ‘MODENA’ model used to predict decay heat in geological deposits; and Charlotte Camilleri, for her ‘SAFER’ network of sensors for continuous, real-time radiation monitoring across urban, industrial and medical sites.
