Following in the steps of Iceland, Ukraine, Moldova and North Macedonia, Montenegro is the fifth non-EU country to join the European Union’s LIFE programme for the environment and climate action.
The agreement was signed on Thursday 15 May by the European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, and the Minister of Ecology for the northern region of Montenegro, Damjan Ćulafić.
Montenegro will now be able to benefit from support from the LIFE programme to mobilise public and private resources “for climate action, biodiversity protection, the circular economy and the transition to clean energy”, as the European Commission summarised on Friday 16 May. Meeting the challenges of complying with environmental standards will be “an essential part of its path towards accession”, noted the European Commission.
The LIFE 2025 call for projects is now open for proposals submitted by applicants from Montenegro. (Original version in French by Florent Servia)
