Relief from EU leaders after Nicușor Dan’s victory in Romanian presidential elections

The Presidents of the European Council, António Costa, the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, welcomed on social networks the victory of the pro-European mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, in the second round of the presidential elections on Sunday 18 May.

For Mr Costa, Mr Dan’s victory is “a strong signal of Romanians’ attachment to the European project”. Ms von der Leyen felt that the Romanian people had chosen “the promise...
